Writing Conference papers-  Mike Hart (July,2002)

What and How?

1.    Find a suitable conference

1.          Use http://www.papersinvited.com

2.        Try (in Google) ‘Call for papers; underwater basketweaving’

3.        Use own knowledge of important professional conferences

4.        Look for ‘Calls for abstracts’

2.   Submit abstract

1.          Follow appropriate guidelines (e.g. may specify 1 page, not more than 500 words etc.)

2.        If you have just missed a deadline, still try your luck (use a crawling memo!)

3.        Locate into a particular theme or conference stream

4.        Most important! Team up with a colleague to submit to the same conference.  Each colleague should act as the co-author to the other’s paper.  If you are both lucky, you have 2x2 papers for your CVs.  You maximise the chances of one of you being asked to present.

3.   Do the research

You can tailor the research you undertake to the title of the conference paper (which could be conceptual, mapping potential for future research etc).  You will usually have 2-3 months for this.

4.   Write up the paper

1.          You may be limited e.g. to 5000 words.

2.        There may be various categories of papers e.g. full papers (c. 5,000 words), working papers (2,500 words) etc.

3.        Follow instructions to authors explicitly

5.   Get travel expenses

1.          £150 a year (according to School Administrator)

2.        £250 every other year

3.        ESME funds

4.        Research Committee

5.        Be prepared to put in 50% (it is on your CV, after all!)

6.   Return in glory!

1.          Distribute your paper to colleagues

2.        Publish on Business Management website

3.        Contribute to Business Management collected papers
